Workday’s September 2026 announcement that Workday Adaptive Planning is becoming Adaptive from Workday is more than a name and logo change. It reflects a broader shift: from periodic planning cycles to faster, more connected decision-making across the business.

At the centre of this shift is Adaptive Decision Intelligence, a capability designed to help finance and operational teams ask questions in natural language, explore scenarios and turn insights into governed plan updates.

Adaptive is helping to put the analysis back into FP&A, but without the need for spreadsheets! Adaptive from Workday (formerly Workday Adaptive Planning) brings deep analysis, insight, scenario modelling, collaboration and plan updates into one environment.

Adaptive Decision Intelligence helps teams move from “what happened?” to “what should we do next?” without leaving the planning platform. It can support natural language questions, connect planning and operational data, compare scenarios and keep decisions traceable within a secure, governed process.

Why it matters for finance and planning teams

For FP&A teams, the value is not simply faster answers. The bigger opportunity is more transparent, repeatable decision-making. Instead of running side analyses in disconnected spreadsheets, finance and business leaders can work from shared assumptions and see how different choices impact forecasts, budgets and operational targets.

New capabilities like Adaptive Decision Intelligence work best when organisations have a strong planning foundation: clean data, well-designed models, clear driver logic and processes that support confident decision-making.

The move to ‘Adaptive from Workday’ shows where enterprise planning is heading: less time spent assembling information, and more time making informed decisions. For finance and operational leaders, the opportunity is no longer just a better forecast, it is a more responsive business.

As the ‘Adaptive from Workday’ name is gradually rolled out, you will still see references to Workday Adaptive Planning. It’s the same platform, evolved to reflect the enhanced decision intelligence capabilities.
